Introduction - Focal Length & Angel of View

Went to Blaise Castle, Bristol for this exercise, hoping that the rain and light would hold out long enough for some photography to actually take place.....

Photo 1

Camera:  Canon EOS 7d
ISO Rating:  100
Shutter Speed:  0.3 sec
f-Stop:  f/5
Focal Length:  44mm
Lens Used:  18-55mm Canon Kit

Taken with both eyes open, and taken when the object appeared the same size in the viewfinder as they did with the unaided eye. Trees and lane are the main focus of attention, at this focal length you cannot see the castle in the distance particularly well.

Camera:  Canon EOS 7d
ISO Rating:  100
Shutter Speed:  1/8 sec
f-Stop:  f/5
Focal Length:  12mm
Lens Used:  Sigma 12-24mm

Taken with Wide Angle Lens, at its widest focal length.  As expected the objects now appear much smaller in the viewfinder than they do to the unaided eye.  Additionally the subject focus changes because the wider view introduces additional objects.  This makes the main focus of this the driveway, but also introduces some confusion and in balance to the photo, i.e. two pots, but only one wolf, the drive now splits into two and the viewer would become confused as to which way to go, where as in Photo 1 the viewer only has one line to follow.

Photo 3

Blaise Driveway 3
Exif Data
Camera:  Canon EOS 7d
ISO Rating:  100
Shutter Speed:  0.40 sec
f-Stop:  f/5
Focal Length:  147mm
Lens Used:  Sigma 55-200mm

Final shot for this exercise taken with zoom lens set longer, but not at its longest.  If I had set it at its longest you would have seen very little and it would not have appeared the photo was taken from the same point.  Again as expected the objects now appear far larger in the viewfinder than with the unaided eye.

Although I have published this set of photos, I am not happy with photo 3, as the point of focus is on the trees in the foreground, making the castle slightly out of focus.  The intention was to return to the same spot in the next few days and retake this third photo, but the weather has prevented it.  As soon as possible I intend to return and re-do this photo.

To be completed - printed viewing exercise.
